A Step-up violin will have a bigger sound with better response than a student level instrument. Higher quality wood and strings are common with advanced violins. The tops are typically solid Spruce, with flamed Maple back, ribs, neck and scroll. Having a Spruce top allows the sounds to expand more, as it is a softer wood.
